Evolution of galaxies in groups: a multi-wavelength approach

This program was supported by the first ISSNAF Fellowship in Space Physics and Engineering, sponsored by Thales Alenia Space, awarded to A. Marino, for 2 years (Oct. 2008 - 2010) :
Final report (pdf file)

We studied a sample of galaxy groups with a wide range of properties (number of member galaxies, velocity dispersion, content of early-type galaxies), including also analogs of our Local Group. We characterize the stellar populations of their member galaxies (ages, masses, and interaction signatures) using GALEX wide-field UV imaging and complementary optical data, as well as the group kinematical and dynamical properties.
About 60% of the galaxies in the local universe are found in groups, where most of their star-formation takes place. In spite of their relevant role in the universe's evolution, galaxy groups were so far poorly studied, compared with galaxy clusters and the field environment.

Highlights:

1) Analogs of our Local Group: what do we learn ?

2) UV-emitting rings around S0 galaxies 3) How do galaxies in groups evolve ?
